Home Learning Policy

(Date Reviewed: February 2023)

At Asker International School we believe that home learning is an important element of student learning. Home Learning should reinforce learning that has taken place in school.

We believe that:

  • Students need sufficient time to complete their home learning tasks. We endeavour to give students one week from the date homework is set.

  • Home Learning is built on former knowledge and should not require the learning of new skills independently.

  • Parents should be involved in home learning activities but should not be required to teach or answer.

  • The quantity of home learning  should be balanced and proportionate.

  • Home learning  should support learning and not merely a cyclical, procedural activity or time-filler. We also identify, however, that repetition in language learning is necessary.

  • Reading can be used as a home learning  activity, however reading should be engaged independently outside school through parental encouragement.

  • The amount of home learning required will vary from grade level to grade level and will be specified by the grade teacher and posted on Seesaw/ManageBac.

  • Home learning may be open-ended such as research tasks, personal reflection, blogs or practical activities.

  • Parental and student feedback helps us to set home learning at an appropriate level and is welcomed.

  • Home learning is an integral part of learning and should be completed to the best of students' abilities.

  • Home learning should be differentiated and allow for elements of choice, extension and action.
